The fact of the matter is that without
effective drug prevention measures then the professionals in the drug
rehabilitation field who are successful at helping people overcome addiction
will always be trying to catch up to the problem instead of getting ahead of
it. In order to truly get to a point where overall drug use is greatly reduced
and eventually eliminated, we must stop our nation's youth from trying drugs in
the first place.
Recent national data has shown that anti-drug messages
in the media do help prevent adolescent drug use. In addition, parents who
speak to their kids about drugs regularly can have a tremendous impact on
preventing drug use among them.
We don't want to teach our kids how to
use drugs "safely". We don't want to risk them becoming another treatment
admission, alcohol-related traffic fatality or drug overdose statistic. Rather
than looking at statistics and saying that more than half of the high school
seniors in America will try illicit drugs, we see it as being more than half
have tried them, meaning what was in past does not dictate our future and it is
up to us to ensure less teenagers use drugs each year. We want them to be
healthy and happy and drug free, and truly helpful drug education has and will
continue to prevent teens from falling into the trap of drug use.
